15. (Old) Stronsay Hotel

The Old Stronsay Hotel used to stand in what is now the Council yard, between Ebenezer Stores and Norwood.

The Stronsay Hotel was a commodious building with a hall and more accommodation behind it. It reputedly had the longest bar in the north of Scotland. No doubt it was a busy place on a Saturday night when all the drifter crews were ashore and unwinding after a week's fishing. Sadly, this all came to an end in 1939 when a fire completely destroyed the building, with the remaining stone walls too unsafe to leave. The building was later demolished.

Remains of the fire-damaged hotel can be seen in this photo (just left of centre).

A visitor's book from the old hotel can be viewed
at the Heritage Centre.
