Customs House

By the 1920, although there had been a customs officer in the island for some time, it was felt that with so many boats coming and going, many of them foreign ships or coming from and heading to foreign ports, a dedicated building was needed. This was built in 1928 and was a busy place in its day as skippers came to have their papers and manifestos examined before they could load and unload their cargos. When it was decided that there was no longer any need for a customs presen on the island, the building was sold and was used as a dwelling house for a time before being bought by the Royal Bank of Scotland as a branch office.

Customs house is on the left-hand side of the photo.

The Customs House, now a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland, can be seen in the centre of the photo.
